Civic Art Gallery
The Pinacoteca Civica is the propelling centre of the Polo Museale Città di Teramo. Located between the Villa Comunale and the urban road leading to the heart of the historic centre, it is an ideal connection point between the city and the public garden.
After a period of closure, the Pinacoteca reopened its doors in 2018 with a layout that presents only a part of the works collected over a century of history, organised chronologically and enhanced by an engaging storytelling itinerary entitled La Pinacoteca si racconta.
Thanks to an up-to-date multimedia system, when visiting the Gallery it is possible to listen to the stories of a number of exponents of Italian culture who can enrich the reading of a work by recalling salient details of the historical and artistic context of reference.
Starting with the 15th-century panels by Giacomo da Campli and the Master of the Crivelleschi Polyptychs, on display in the entrance hall, the visit to the Pinacoteca continues through the flourishing Baroque season, witnessed in Teramo by the canvases of renowned Neapolitan and Roman painters displayed in the first room.
The liveliness of the 19th century period, which saw artists studying in Naples but also in Florence, which became the capital of the Kingdom in 1864, is represented in the second room by the paintings and sculptures of local artists of national importance such as Pasquale Celommi, Raffaello Pagliacetti and Cesare Averardi.
Twentieth-century art, in Teramo as elsewhere in Italy, is animated by the attempt to overcome localism in order to confront the most inventive experiences of the time. In the third room, the works of Guido Montauti, Giovanni Melarangelo, and Venanzo Crocetti highlight the up-to-date skills of local artists appreciated nationally and internationally.
The fourth and last room hosts temporary exhibitions that from time to time enter into dialogue with the renovated rooms of the Pinacoteca, as in the case of the exhibition La fragile bellezza. Castelli's Storytelling between the 17th and 18th centuries held in 2022 and dedicated to the famous Castelli ceramics.
Since November 2022, the storytelling path La Pinacoteca si racconta has been flanked by a further user experience proposed and developed by the Cooperativa Socioculturale. The project La Pinacoteca si ascolta was realised in order to accompany four of the works in the exhibition, one for each room, with a specially elaborated soundtrack. The compositions focus on the realisation of a fruition that leads from image to music and from music to image.
